Can I colour my hair while pregnant?

Despite what you may have read, yes, it’s possible to dye your hair and keep it looking gorgeous throughout your pregnancy. You just need to be a bit careful to minimise risks.

Don’t colour your hair until the second trimester. As an alternative, maybe consider using a natural hair colour and then later into your pregnancy ask your colourist about using a dye that has less chemicals like ammonia and peroxide contained in them.

Consider highlights instead of an all over colour. This is also a plus for easy maintenance during your pregnancy, as highlights don’t grow out as obviously as a full colour. Also the dye doesn’t touch the scalp with highlights so won’t come into contact with your skin.

It’s also important to note that various research bodies suggest that although the majority of hair colours contain chemical substances, very little chemicals from the dye are absorbed into your system and there are no reports of hair dye causing changes in pregnancies despite women colouring their hair whilst pregnant.
